Our Campus


  • Founded in 1887 by Senator William McMaster - first president of the Bank of Commerce (now CIBC); moved to Hamilton in 1930
  • Home to over 3,800 graduate students
  • 300 acres of property with 30 acres designated as a central core pedestrian campus
  • Committed to creating a truly sustainable campus

The campus has grown immensely since the University officially moved to Hamilton in 1930. The original six buildings, all still in use, were added to over the years and now there are 56 buildings on McMaster's campus.

Our City


  • Hamilton, a waterfront city, is the fourth-largest city in Ontario (population: 500,000), ninth in Canada
  • situated on the Niagara escarpment
  • less than an hour's drive from the U.S. border and only 45 minutes from Toronto, Niagara Falls, Waterloo and Guelph
  • with over 100 waterfalls within the city's boundaries, we are known as the "City of Waterfalls"

McMaster's large, attractive campus, the interior of which is open only to pedestrians and cyclists, is at the western end of Lake Ontario. The University is minutes from downtown Hamilton, and the activities that a major city has to offer. Nearby attractions include Cootes Paradise, the Bruce Trail, the Waterfront Trail, and the Royal Botanical Gardens.
